Welland website builder or a local designer? A sum you can run tonight

For plenty of Welland shops a builder is the right call. Here is how to tell whether yours is one, and the sum that settles the money side.

Short answer: use a website builder if Welland customers already find you by word of mouth and the site only has to show your hours and phone number. Hire a designer when you want the calls from people who search for what you sell and have never heard of you, or when you want a page for each service. A Starter site is $2,500 CAD and Grow, with a page for each service, is $6,000, both paid once, and you can change your own hours and text without calling anyone.

If you searched "Welland website builder", you are probably weighing a monthly subscription against a one-time build. A builder (Wix™, Squarespace™ and their cousins) is software you rent to make a website yourself. A designer builds it for you, and in my case the domain, hosting account and files are registered in your name. Both suit some shops, and you can tell which yours is in an hour.

Welland adds a wrinkle. The city has two business districts, each with its own Business Improvement Area (BIA, the local association of shops and property owners that promotes its own strip): the Welland Downtown BIA and the North Welland BIA. A customer who finds your site on a phone needs to see at the top which part of town you are in (the Welland page covers what that means for a site built here).

The sum that settles the money side

Look up the yearly price of the builder plan you would actually need on that company's own price page. Plans change, so I will not quote one from memory. Then take off what a domain and hosting would cost you each year on a site of your own (small, and I put them in writing before you pay anything), and divide my Starter price by what is left.

To show the arithmetic, suppose the builder plan is $400 a year and domain and hosting come to $100 a year. Both figures are invented to show the sum. The gap is $300 a year, so $2,500 takes more than eight years to pay back. If you expect to stay on a builder that long, or your evenings are worth more to you than what the builder saves, the fixed price starts to look reasonable. If you expect to move on in two years, rent.

The sum leaves out my optional maintenance plan, which starts at $275 a month. Add that and the Starter site costs more every year than the builder, so on money alone it never pays back. What the plan buys is time: someone else does the updates and backups. You can skip it and look after the site yourself.

Here is the same sum laid out, using the invented figures.

If you need a page for every service, run the sum a second time against Grow at $6,000.

What a builder leaves behind

Check this before you build anything. Wix's own help page says the site has to stay on Wix's servers. Squarespace lets you export some of your content, and its page lists what does not come along (checked 2026-10-31). The DIY or designer guide has the general test. For Welland, the short version is: keep your domain in your own name, and keep your text and original photos on your own computer. The layout stays behind either way.

If you build it yourself in Welland

  1. Say which district you are in, with your phone number and hours, at the top of the page on a phone. A visitor who cannot tell which end of town you are in may go to the wrong one.
  2. Name Welland in the text of the page as well as the footer, and any neighbouring town you really drive to, such as Pelham or Thorold. A page that never says where you are cannot help a person searching for "plumber in Welland".
  3. Get listed where Welland businesses already are, with the same business name, address and phone number everywhere. The Welland/Pelham Chamber of Commerce directory is part of a South Niagara network, and both BIAs are worth asking what a member gets.

Where a Starter site fits

A Starter site covers the home page, the work, a page or two for what people phone about, and contact, with the words written for you. A build takes about two weeks from your yes to a live site. The pricing page shows all three sizes, and the cost guide lists what to ask any designer before paying a deposit.

Common questions

Is a builder cheaper than a designer over five years?
Often, yes, and the sum above shows when it stops being true. At the invented figures it is cheaper for more than eight years, and for good if you add a maintenance plan, so check your own numbers before assuming either way.
Should I use Wix or hire a web designer in Welland?
Use Wix if word of mouth fills your calendar and the site only needs your hours and number. Hire someone when strangers searching for your service are customers you would miss, or when you want a page per service and the files in your name.
Do I need a website if I am in one of Welland's BIAs?
A BIA promotes its district and its pages can send people your way. Your own page is still where you say what you sell and how to reach you. Ask your BIA what a member gets.
Do I need separate pages for downtown and north Welland?
Not if you trade from one address. Say which district you are in and leave it there. If you serve customers in both, a page for each is worth a quote, and that is a Grow-size job.
Can I start on a builder and move later?
Yes. Keep your domain in your name and your text and photos in your own files, and the move costs you the layout, which means a rebuild, but not your name, your words or your photos.
